Yesterday, we reported that Microsoft Windows had 2.1% of the worldwide tablet market with a total of 4 million units sold in 2013 according to Gartner. Microsoft is already working towards driving more sales volume. One such strategy is to produce low cost and high value devices.
At MWC, Microsoft announced that they are reducing the hardware requirements of Windows for tablets in an effort to reduce the price of Windows tablets.
Amrish Goyal, director of Windows business group in India told the following to TOI,
“We are reducing our required hardware specification for Windows to bare minimum that is needed for good experience. We want to be price competitive with Android. We want to get the bill of material for Windows tablets down,”
He also revealed that Microsoft will be selling tablets that cost around Rs 10,000 in the mid of 2014.
“We will probably not sell a tablet for Rs 5,000. But yes, we will sell tablets with a price of around Rs 10,000 by middle of this year,”
Windows tablets like Dell Venue 8 Pro, Acer W4 are already available in the market, but they cost around Rs.25,000. I guess, traditional OEMs like Dell, HP and Acer will release Windows tablets that cost less than Rs.20000 and Indian OEMs like Micromax will release low-cost tablets with bare minimum specs that will go on sale around Rs.10000.
Vishal Tripathi, Gartner’s principal analyst who tracks the tablet market commented the following on Microsoft entering low-cost tablet market,
Microsoft can deliver on its promise, it will definitely benefit. “The Windows brand still resonates with people. They use Windows computers in offices. They are comfortable with it and if they have an option to get a Windows tablet at price that is similar to an Android tablet, they will likely pick it,”
He added, “A Rs 15,000 Windows tablet with decent build quality and touch response will also interest a lot of enterprises that are looking to get tablets for their employees.”
